Introduction
The three orangutan species that live in Indonesia, i.e. Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), BorneanĀ orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), and tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis), are threatened with extinction. In Borneo, the population of this species has decreased by 50% over the last 60 years (Ancrenaz, et al., 2016). In Sumatra, the population has decreased by 80% in the last 75 years (Singleton, et al., 2017). The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) categorizes it as critical.
One of the main threats to orangutans is hunting and illegal trade.
Law enforcement against hunting and illegal trade has actually increased, at least since the 1990s. However, the reality on the ground that the population density continues to decline indicates that there are many things that need to be improved regarding law enforcement.
Based on the introduction,Ā Auriga Nusantara organized this virtual discussionĀ with the themeĀ Orangutan Conservation and Law Enforcement.
